Generally speaking, saltwater/marine aquariums require more attention due to the sensitive inhabitants which exists in the hobby. Here are the basic equipment which are needed to operate a salt/marine aquarium.

Hydrometers and Refractometers

Hydrometers and Refractometers are both measuring devices for estimating the salinity levels in your aquarium. For the marine/saltwater hobby, it is critical that you establish the proper environment for your fish. The difference between the two is that Hydrometers are a much cheaper solution, and less accurate. One of the causes is that the calibration needle could be stuck causing imbalance reading.

The Refractometer is about two-third the price of a Hydrometer but provides a much more accurate reading. It resembles a mini-microscopic device in which you place a few drops onto the viewing pane. The droplets from the aquarium are then measured against a scale which is viewable through the lens of the Refractometer.

Protein Skimmers

Protein Skimmers are highly recommended in the marine/saltwater hobby. These are foam making devices which the foam are generated by removing organic waste compound from the water before they break down into nitrates and phosphate. With this functionality, the protein skimmer will improve the overall water quality for the fishes and corals and reduce the amount of water change.

Protein Skimmers are available in many different styles. Protein skimmer devices are made to accommodate every aquarium setups and readily available, there are devices which sit inside or outside of a sump tank or the device could rests next to tank or simply hang on the back of the aquarium. Whichever you decide, make sure you purchase the most you can afford; this will help keep your aquarium healthy and reduce the amount of maintenance required.

Here are some of the different types of protein skimmers out there today. Just remember each model is designed different, but the end-goal is the same. So make sure you do enough research before you make the purchase because they are not the cheapest equipment to buy and you want to make sure you don’t have to upgrade in the future for the same tank.
