Sony TV Built-in Wi-Fi Not Working

If you are unable to connect to the Internet with your Sony TV, you've come to the right place. The most common issue is the Wi-Fi Built-in not working.

The information provided will help resolve issues with connecting your TV to a wireless network.  This article is primarily focused on when the Built-in Wi-Fi option will not turn on or is not working.

The screenshots and steps may vary depending on the model and software version. However, the information should be enough to get you to the solution. Though this is referencing a Sony TV brand (Android), the same steps can be used to troubleshoot any television.

It happens more often than you think

Nothing is more frustrating than when your Smart TV is not working as expected. We’ve all experienced it. There are a few things you can check before jumping the gun.

Before you get started, make sure...

  • Your wireless router is powered on.
  • Your wireless router is connected to the Internet. You can confirm if the Internet is working in your home by checking if any of your other devices is working.
  • The Wi-Fi on your TV is turned on. You can locate the option in the menu under the Network settings.
  • The solutions below can help solve a few other issues that may exist, such as:
    • the apps in the TV are slow or not loading
    • the picture is not displaying
Note: All of the steps performed below will not delete any of your personal settings, except for solution #4. 

4 Steps You Can Try To get the Wi-Fi to Work

Solution #1: Press and Hold the Power Button

Sony TV remotes allow for restarting your TV by pressing and holding down the Power button. After about 5 seconds, the TV should restart within 1 minute. 

If it doesn’t, simply press the power button to turn it back on.

Then you can begin to cycle through the TV Apps (YouTube, NetFlix etc.,) to see if the TV is connected to the Internet.

If not, onto Solution #2.

Solution #2: Reset the TV

  1. Press the HOME button on the remote control
  2. Under Settings, select Settings on the screen menu.
  3. Select About
  4. Select Restart

Then you can begin to cycle through the TV Apps (YouTube, NetFlix etc.,) to see if the TV is connected to the Internet.

If not, onto Solution #3.

Solution #3: Unplug the TV

  1. Power off the TV.
  2. Unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. 
  3. Wait 5 seconds
  4. Power it back on

Then you can begin to cycle through the TV Apps (YouTube, NetFlix etc.,) to see if the TV is connected to the Internet.

If not, onto Solution #4.

Solution #4: Factory Reset

Note: Performing a Factory Reset will delete all of your personal settings and data from your TV. This includes all of your network configurations, custom apps downloaded and passwords.

  1. Press the HOME button on the remote control, and navigate to settings on the screen menu.
  2. Locate the Factory Data Reset option under Device Preferences. This will vary depending on which TV model and app version you’re running.

Once you have followed the steps on the screen, the TV will reset and will take a few minutes.

When the TV completes its reset,  you can begin to cycle through the TV Apps (YouTube, NetFlix etc.,) to see if the TV is connected to the Internet.
